Abstract - Since the river Garza does not flow into any other river but overflows into the country of Ghedi and causes floodings, with serious environmental and hygienic consequences, the construction of a canal to bring its waters into the river Chiese is planned. In order to assess the real environmental effect of this project, the water quality or both rivers has been studied by means of chemical, microbiological, biological and toxicological analyses: the consequences of the inflow of the Garza on the waters of the Chiese has been evaluated. The study has revealed a fairly good quality, from the chemical and biological viewpoint, of thc water of the river Chiese, contrary to those of the Garza, in which phenomena typical of polluted waters and degraded environments are evident. For both rivers the tests of acute toxicity with Daphnia magna have given favourable results, contrary to those of chronic toxicity. In case the two rivers were connected, the data obtained by means of the mixture equation forecast a sharp worsening of the waters of the river Chiese, due chiefly to the increase in nutrients which would affect an ecosystem already under environmental stress. The damages could be recluced by reclaiming the catchment basinsy by increasing the minimum flow of the river Chiese, in order to increase its receptive capacity, and by building a system of phytodepuration for the waters of the river Garza.
