san Giuseppe
short description of the church of san Giuseppe
Between 1519 and 1580 a new monastic complex, which included a Renaissance-style church, was built for the Grey Friars, after the former monastery, situated in the area now called Torrelunga, had been “sacked” in 1512. Inside the church, a vast barrel vault with splendid geometric decorations, supported by eight thick columns, covers the large central nave and confers a strong sense of spatial unity to the whole.   Among the important works to be seen in the church are the organ by Graziadio Antegnati (1581), which still possesses exceptional sonority, and the tomb of the famous Venetian musician Benedetto Marcello. The cloisters are well worth visiting for their historically significant frescoes and also because they house the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, which has recently been restored.
