According to tradition, there has been a church on this site ever since 402. The building was altered in the 16th century, when the Cappella del Sacramento was built, and in the following century, when the Chapel of the “Madonna del Tabarrino” was built symmetrically opposite. The last alterations to the church date back to 1651-1685. The division of the interior into a nave and two aisles is reflected in the design of the façade, which still bears traces of the original rose window. The elegant Renaissance-style portal, made in polychrome marble (late 15th century), is attributed to Filippo de Grassi from Milan. Inside the church, in the Chapel of the Sacrament, there is a magnificent testimony of Brescian painting in the 16th century: scenes by Moretto (on the right-hand wall) and by Romanino (on the left-hand wall) representing episodes from the Old and the New Testament. One of the cloisters annexed to the church, built at the end of the 15th century, is still magnificent in appearance.
