Throughout Brescia's long history the squares have in turns become the heart of the city and the main reference point for the surrounding area. In the Middle Ages Piazza del Foro, the centre of Roman Brescia, was overshadowed by the growing importance of the Piazza del Duomo (now officially renamed Piazza Paolo VI) with its two cathedrals and the palace of the Broletto. After Brescia had become part of the Venetian Republic, Piazza della Loggia and Piazza del Mercato were inaugurated. In the 1930s Piazza della Vittoria was built as the new monumental "Forum" of the city.
