The square was designed by Marcello Piacentini and inaugurated in 1932. The monumental square was built in the city centre on the site of an old medieval quarter. There are a colossal Post Office and a brick Torrione (high tower) on the north side. The facings of the other buildings and the paving of the Quadriportico and of the arcades are of two-coloured marble.
